Electrical and Control Engineering Department at AAAAA University led me into the realm of electric machinery and helped me hold firm my planning for further studies in this discipline.  I was majored in Mechanical Engineering at the time when I was admitted to AA University and later I decided to commit myself to the stud of Dynamo-electrics thanks to my interest in Electrics when taking up the course of General Physics II (Freshman year in Spring 2001).  Transferred to Department of Electrical and Control Engineering upon completing my freshman year with an excellent achievement of Top 2 and the hard studies in then coming three years proved my choice is correct.  Among all the related disciplines, I am particularly fascinated in the area of Intelligent Machine and my achievement in the study of Intelligent Machine is very outstanding.  I’ve chosen Control System and DSP as the objectives for my further exploration since they are the very basics of Intelligent Machine.

 

Upon completing the basic requirements, I selected Intelligent Machine and Signal Processing as my core study subjects.  My selected subjects for Intelligent Machine include DSP Programming, Sensor and Interface, and Introduction to Intelligent machines; and Signal Processing, Introduction to DSP, and Principles of communication system.  In the associated courses, I took Linear control system I, II and Labs, and Introduction to Image processing and recognition.  All these courses have trained me on how to apply theories into practical operation in lab works and project studies.My GPA reported 3.42; and that for the final 60 credits, 3.65 showing I was making progress and became better competent in facing challenging upper level courses.  Hence, I am very confident and ready in taking further studies in graduate school.Lab works of Electronics Lab III, Control Labs and DSP programming Labs impressed me and paid the best benefits for me.  Electrics lab III is the Prerequisite of Control Labs.  In Control Labs, we present block diagram in linear control system in the form of circuitry followed with the completion of experiments.  For example, P.I.D controller and Lead/Lag compensator were respectively expressed in circuit block, and in Electrics Lab III we designed each Functional Circuit Block to find out the circuit operation followed with zero-in test to ensure no error to be carried over to Control Labs.  In Control Lab we used all circuit blocks to simulate Block Diagram in Linear Control System.  All the important theories about Linear Control System were verified in Control Labs.  We were instructed to take advantage of Matlab’s Simulink functions to complete Pre-lab simulation.  All these trainings involving mutual comparisons between simulation and hands-on helped me be familiar with and develop better programming proficiency in Matlab.

In the course of DSP programming and Labs, we applied TMS320VC5402 DSP Starter Kit furnished by Texas Instrument to writ programs in Assembly Language to run DSP operation rules –Real Time Fast Fourier Transform etc., and concluded a project.  In the project, we searched for those characteristic frequencies of musical sound to simulate sounds played by various types of musical instruments through string waves synthesis, and further to edit into a fragment of music accompanied with chorus.  This project helped me better understanding presentation and analysis of audio signals in the Frequency Domain.

 

During my junior year, (Fall 2002~Spring 2003) I participated in the workshop of MP3 and Bluetooth wireless transmission offered by Professors LIN, Tjin-deng, LIN, Tjein-yo, PHD, and LIO, Te-cheng, PHD.  The workshop highlighted the production using Bluetooth transmission of a Wireless Recordable MP3 player.  Based on Bluetooth transmission, we wrote Assembly language using Microprocessor 8051 to control Mp3 en/decoder chip in achieving the function of wireless audio recording.  We successfully commanded 8051 to control Micronas 3587F Mpeg layer 3 de/encoder to permit storage of audio data into the memory of a chip.  Through the Project, I was familiar with Bluetooth protocol and MP3 file specification, and knowing how to using chip’s Data sheet to test the chip, and applying what I had learnt from Assembly language programming in Microcomputer system in the Project. The rewarding experience in the series of lab works and workshop lent me more interest in control system and DSP; furthermore, I developed better appreciation of teamwork spirits, skills of coordination and communication, pragmatic research, independent operation, and expression capabilities in writing and speech.  Now I am capable of handling all related classroom and lab works in the area of electric machinery thanks to my full understanding of the mutual transfer between system’s time and frequency response and what they stand for the significance in physics.

 

I plan to spend two years at Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, College Park , University of BBB to take the master program.  Control in the scope of Information Science and Systems will be my major; and Communication and Signal Processing, my second major with the ambition to extend my studies to Intelligent machine.  I find that the Department of UMD offers a complete program for me to further explore into the disciplines of Control system and DSP.   In addition, Intelligent Servo-system Laboratory at the Department is proud of maintaining extensive scope of research and achievements that fit my commitments of future studies so well.  

Intelligent System is playing an even more important role in our lives.  Reports have indicated that Robots will exit automobiles in future.   Whereas improving life convenience for the mankind is the mission of an engineer, I am willing and ready to firmly commit to the study of Intelligent System. Profession W, Ku-yang, the Dean of Department once told me that a person with a master degree is the one who is able to independently complete studies and solve problems challenged while a person with a PhD is the one who is able to identify in-depth issues justifying investment of research efforts in a particular area and to explore into it until the question is answered.  Upon completing my master program, I wish to continue taking PhD program so to prepare myself in the territory of electric machinery the agile thinking and capability sufficient for me to do my contribution in making our lives easier and more convenient.
