Admission requirement

What We Look For In Prospective Graduate IMC Students

Students in the full-time graduate IMC program come from a variety of countries, schools and undergraduate majors. No specific major or prior coursework is required. The most common undergraduate majors are communications, advertising, marketing, business, economics and journalism. The following criteria are used to evaluate applications:

lA record of strong academic performance

lExcellent interpersonal communication and quantitative skills

lFull-time work experience in a related field is strongly preferred. About two-thirds of enrolled students have such experience. Applicants directly from undergraduate programs are expected to have strong academic credentials.

lAn understanding of integrated marketing communications and how Medill prepares students for careers in this area.

lEvidence of the maturity and professionalism needed to succeed in marketing communications professions.

lAbility to work well with others on team projects in a collaborative environment.

Additional Considerations for Prospective IMC Students

The IMC program is an intense, professionally-oriented program that requires enthusiasm and energy as well as maturity, reliability and commitment.

Students have the opportunity to pursue a variety of career options, some that are qualitative and communications oriented and others that are quantitative and research oriented. All students learn the fundamentals of IMC as a strategic process for developing integrated communications.

Students interested in careers in strategic communications or brand strategy should demonstrate strong competencies in written and oral communications.

Students interested in careers in marketing research or data analytics should demonstrate strong competencies in quantitative analysis.

International students must demonstrate very strong spoken and written English-language skills via the interview, application essay, and TOEFL or IELTS scores.

What about average GPAs and test scores?

We review each application file individually and holistically, considering test scores and GPAs in context with the rest of the file, including essays, resume and recommendations. We look at your undergraduate transcripts not just for the overall GPA, but also for the courses you took and how you performed in them. We look closely at your resume and strongly consider your interview to gain an understanding of what you might contribute to your classmates' understanding of complex contemporary marketing and branding issues.

Bachelor's Degree

You must have a bachelor's degree or expect to earn one before enrollment.

GRE or GMAT Test Scores:

Medill requires GRE or GMAT scores. The test must have been taken within five years of your application submission date.

You may request a waiver of the GRE and GMAT requirement if:

  • You are a current degree-seeking Northwestern University student or degree-holding Northwestern University alumnus/a;
  • You have 5 or more years of full-time professional work experience in marketing or a closely related field.

If you request a waiver, Medill may still recommend that you take the GRE or GMAT if we think it will allow us to give better consideration to your application.

TOEFL or IELTS Test Scores (For International Applicants)

If you are an international student who earned an undergraduate degree at a college or university where the primary language of instruction was not English, submit TOEFL or IELTS scores. The TOEFL or IELTS must have been taken within two years of your application submission date.

If you earned your entire bachelor's degree from a non-U.S. institution where the language of instruction was English, you do not need to submit TOEFL or IELTS scores. Instead, please provide official documentation from your college or university that the language of instruction was English.

Is it preferable to have some full-time work experience before applying?

Work experience is not required. It is preferable to have some exposure to your chosen field. This can be accomplished through a combination of coursework, undergraduate activities, internships, and/or full-time or part-time work experience.

Does the Admissions Committee favor certain undergraduate majors?

No. We seek to admit students with a variety of majors. We consider both breadth of academic background and areas of specialization in your undergraduate program, as well as any prior graduate work. See the "What we look for in prospective students" pages for IMC.

Is there a minimum GPA required?

No. However, this is not to say that GPA and test scores are not important. We review applications holistically to see if all elements in the file, taken together, indicate potential to succeed in our program. See the "What we look for in prospective students" pages for IMC.

Is there a minimum GRE or GMAT score required?

No. We review applications holistically and the GRE or GMAT score is just one of several criteria we consider for admission.

Is there a minimum TOEFL score required?

No. We review applications holistically and the TOEFL score is just one of several criteria we consider for admission.

Process & Mailing Address

  1. Access the online application
  2. Application fee

àThere is a $75 non-refundable application fee. You may pay this online by credit card or indicate that you will be paying by check. If paying by check, please ensure your name and "application fee" appear on the check. If you have questions or would like to request a fee waiver, contact the Medill Office of Graduate Admissions at 847-491-2052 or MedillGraduateAdmissions@northwestern.edu.

àCurrent Northwestern undergraduates do not have to pay the application fee.

  1. Academic Transcripts:

àMedill requires official academic transcripts from all colleges and universities attended, excluding institutions where you took non-credit coursework, for instance, a certificate program. Please request an official, sealed transcript from the registrar. The registrar should send transcripts to the Medill Office of Graduate Admissions at 1845 Sheridan Road, Evanston, IL 60208-2101 or electronically to MedillGraduateAdmissions@northwestern.edu. If you have transfer credit or study abroad credit, submit a transcript from the original grade-granting institution, even if the transfer credit appears on your final degree transcript.

àPlease note: Medill allows you the option to upload an unofficial copy of your transcript into your online application. Transcripts submitted by you, rather than the college or university, will be considered unofficial. Based on your unofficial transcript, you may be offered admission on the condition that we receive your official transcript prior to enrollment.

àApplicants with international transcripts must provide an English translation with their application if the transcripts were not originally issued in English.

àAdmitted students with an international transcript (except Fulbright candidates) must submit an independent course-by-course credential evaluation and degree verification from a NACES provider (see www.naces.org for a list) and an official English translation of the transcripts (if they were not originally issued in English). The credential evaluation and degree evaluation form is due 30 days prior to enrollment. If your undergraduate degree is a three-year degree, Medill will determine if it is sufficient preparation for our program.

  1. Recommendation

àMedill requires three letters of recommendation from persons who can assess your academic and professional abilities (e.g., current or former professors, employers, supervisors). Recommendations from family or friends who do not have direct experience with your academic or professional work will not be accepted. Enter your recommenders' contact information in the online application. The system will then email your recommenders instructions on how to submit their letters online. You are responsible for reminding recommenders to submit their letters through the online system by the deadline.

  1. Essays: Please answer the Professional Essay question posed in the IMC Essays section of the application; your answer should not exceed 750 words.
  2. Official GRE or GMAT scores

àMedill allows you the option to self-report your test scores on your application. Once you submit your application, we will review these unofficial scores along with the rest of your file. If we decide to offer you admission based on these unofficial scores, it will be on the condition that you send us your official scores at least 30 days prior to enrollment.

àThe official copy of the test scores should be sent directly to Medill from ETS or GMAC. Our GRE code is 1699. Our GMAT code is 6WZ-XH-66. Allow four weeks for our office to receive your scores.

  1. Resume

International applicants must also submit:

  1. TOEFL or IELTS scores

àSend TOEFL scores to Medill using code 1699-18. The IELTS test must be the Academic version.

àMedill allows you the option to self-report your test scores on your application. Once you submit your application, we will review these unofficial scores along with the rest of your file. If we decide to offer you admission based on these unofficial scores, it will be on the condition that you send us your official scores at least 30 days prior to enrollment.

FAQ:

I haven't taken the GRE or GMAT yet and I'm afraid my scores won't reach Medill by the deadline. What should I do?

You will probably receive your unofficial test scores (test-taker copy) before we receive your official scores. These usually reach us around three weeks after you take the test. If you have received your test scores, indicate them in the space provided for self-reported scores in the online application. If you don't have your scores by the time you apply, email MedillGraduateAdmissions@northwestern.edu a copy of them to us as soon as you receive them. Scores sent this way are unofficial, but they will enable us to start reviewing your file. We cannot complete reviewing a file without test scores.
